Starbucks: an observation

An interesting Starbucks tidbit from a vegan’s perspective…Female baristas almost always wipe the milk steamer with a rag before steaming soy milk. Male baristas, on the other hand, only do this about half of the time I’ve observed. The stats are fairly similar for washing out the metallic milk pitchers before switching from milk to soy milk, although most Starbucks use different pitchers.I’ll still drink the coffee either way, but I know vegans with a more strict policy on dairy who would have a problem with this. It’s a fairly easy thing to add to the training program.I hope that the Starbucks shutdown will include retraining on milk vs. soy milk preparation.

More than Twitter

The great thing about Chyrp is that I can go past 140 characters. I am treating this site a bit more like Twitter than I am like a full-length blog, so I don’t expect to see long posts here.As soon as the RSS module is released for Chyrp, I will be aggregating Twitter and Flickr here, and probably my open source blog entries, too.

Advice on Chyrp

If you’re considering a move to Chyrp, especially if you’re currently using Tumblr and want to self-host, I’d recommend that you wait just a bit longer. Chyrp is going through a period of rapid updates. Since I made the move to Chyrp on February 6th, there have already been several releases with various new features and bug fixes. Keeping up with new releases has been problematic for me not only due to the amount of time it takes to migrate a site (and re-add code changes for my theme), but also running into migration bugs along the way.The last upgrade was especially problematic (v1.1.3.1). I had a problem accessing the database and all of the ‘Feathers’ that allow for various posting types - pictures, sounds, links, text quotes, places, etc. broke as the author of these Feathers hasn’t updated them yet.Chyrp is going to be a very popular open source lifestream platform, it’s just not the best time for large-scale adoption. Give it a few weeks.NOTE: I am still a big fan of WordPress, and am using it for a number of projects. I just think that Chyrp is going to be a better platform for a personal site that’s somewhere between Twitter and a full Blog.

Back from Napa

I’m back home from Open Source Think Tank 2008 in Napa, California. The event was great. As it ran through Saturday, I am feeling a bit cheated out a weekend right now - lots to do in just 24 hours before the work week starts up again.

Moving to Chyrp

Rinzai.com has gone through a number of technology transitions since its launch in the mid-90s. From many years of hand-coding to WordPress to Apple’s iWeb and now to Chyrp. Please check back for more content as I am in the process of migrating the site.

Upgraded to WordPress 2.2

I was finally able to upgrade rinzai.com to WordPress 2.2 today. I ran into a few small problems with outdated plugins, but the entire upgrade process took less than an hour. The primary reason for the upgrade was the Twitter Tools plugin from Alex King, which will allow me to auto post tweets to my blog in a daily archive. Many thanks to Brian Cors for the recommendation.

Why Digg is going down the tubes

(Double meaning of the title intended) I have been noticing a disturbing trend on Digg, a user driven social content website. Based on a feature called ‘Bury It’, user comments on a news item are hidden or visible based on an open voting system. The end result? If you’re in the minority, your voice will not effectively be heard. The heavily geek-oriented userbase of Digg will regularly vote a comment down simply on the basis that it’s in opposition, even if the comment is well-informed, thoughtful, and polite. Jerry Falwell’s death today is but the most recent example of this trend. The Digg posting entitled Rev. Jerry Falwell, leader of the Moral Majority, Dead at 74. Rest In Peace has a number of perspectives, such as…

“Hey man, regardless of your thoughts, the man is dead and a whole community is grieving. Give it some time before you bash.”

The comment above was hidden and marked with a score of -78. That means 78 more people voted thumbs down on this comment than thumbs up.

I hope it’s not too hot where he’s at right now. Oh wait. I do. Good riddance you ***ing *****. I hope you’re burning in a place you’ve feared in your life.

The comment above was visible and marked with a score of +76. That means 76 more people voted thumbs up on this comment than thumbs down.

There are hundreds of other comments on this news posting, and you will notice that most of the opposition voices, those praising Falwell’s life or at least asking for civility, are buried. I don’t know much about Jerry Falwell, and therefore don’t have an informed opinion on the matter. Religious personalities are not an area I have much interest in. However, it’s tactless to post rude and obnoxious comments about someone’s death. Online anonymity accentuates nasty people.

I continue to read Digg regularly and find it to be an excellent source of news tidbits, mostly technology related. I have found myself no longer reading comments, however, due to the burying of diverse and clearly unappreciated voices.
